Easter Egg

What is an Easter egg and why is it a special gift at Easter?

An Easter egg is a decorated, usually chocolate egg given or hidden during Easter. The egg represents rebirth and resurrection and all the renewal and hope that are key to Easter. Decorating and passing eggs goes all the way back to early Christianity, when eggs were forbidden for Lent, and then eaten on the occasion of remission. It grew gradually into a family pastime: eggs were painted or dyed brightly. These days there are also chocolate Easter eggs which come with candy or other surprises, and are hidden for children to find during an Easter egg hunt. The Easter egg reminds us that Jesus Christ rose from the dead and gives us new life, so it is a favorite reminder of the season’s joy and hope.
