Maundy Thursday

What is Maundy Thursday and why is it important?

Maundy Thursday is the Thursday before Easter when Jesus shares the Last Supper with His followers. This is significant because it was during this time that the Eucharist, or Holy Communion, became an orthodox sacrament.

In the Gospels, Jesus took bread and wine and passed them between his disciples as His body and blood during the Last Supper, and asked them to do the same for him. ‘Maundy’ derives from the Latin “mandatum,” which means “command”, and Jesus said, ‘Let our love be done.

Maundy Thursday is celebrated during the church services with the washing of feet in honor of Jesus’ devoutness and sacrifice. It’s a dark day that sets the stage for Good Friday, which then culminates in the resurrection on Easter Sunday. The day highlights Jesus’ suffering, love and admonition.
